Ever since electronic cigarettes hit the markets worldwide and became increasingly popular, companies started advertising them as smoking cessation aids. This caused a very strong reaction from scientific and medical communities across the globe, claiming that using e-cigarettes as a means to stop smoking is not only inefficient but also harmful.
Smokers, especially heavy smokers, usually struggle with their habit and are willing to try just about anything to get rid of it, aware of the detrimental effects tobacco smoke has on their health. Logically, when they hear about smokeless electronic cigarettes, they want to try them as a possible way that will finally help them kick the nasty and unhealthy habit. Smoking does so many bad things to the human body, from its appearance to its basic, vital functions. In many countries of the world smoking is among the top five causes of cancer and other fatal diseases. Nicotine is not the only harmful element of cigarettes – many scientists argue that it is actually the smoke from a cigarette that is the most dangerous. This is where e-cigarettes come in and why so many people believe they are healthier than tobacco.
Furthermore, when it comes to quitting smoking, e-cigarettes can be compared to nicotine patches and other solutions. Just like a nicotine patch delivers a dose of the much needed (or wanted) nicotine to the bloodstream, so does the vapor from an electronic cigarette. Because of this, some people think e-cigs can be used in the struggle to finally kick the habit.
All these methods still involve smoking and still involve exposure to harmful elements of tobacco. This includes electronic cigarettes, which do contain nicotine (in variable concentrations). Nicotine is a dangerous toxin that causes addiction and other negative effects on the health.
On the other hand, e-cigarettes are in fact less harmful than tobacco, and for several reasons. For one, they do not produce smoke. They produce vapor instead, vapor which is not a product of burning and does not involve any of the dangerous, potentially toxic by-products of burning. Electronic cigarettes do not harm those around you and do not pollute the environment. You can’t burn yourself or others with an electronic cigarette. And why it is still not advisable to use an electronic cigarette near children, because you’d be giving them a very bad example, vapor from e-cigarettes is far less harmful for them than cigarette smoke.
It can be concluded that e-cigarettes should not be used as a smoking cessation aid. If you want to quit smoking, consider one of the methods that actually involves quitting smoking, not just substituting it for other forms of nicotine supply. On the other hand, if you still haven’t made up your mind about quitting and you are still planning on smoking, then it is definitely safer for you to switch to electronic cigarettes.
